 Dexter series finale review

Showtime

So Dexter delivered the worst series finale ever Sunday night, worse even than the risible Lost finale or at least that’s what everyone is saying. It was actually pretty decent, delivered with the familiar mix of fudges, fakeouts and get-the-fuck-outs we have come to expect from the show. If you stuck with Dexter through all 8 seasons and were genuinely angry at its ending I really don’t know what to say. What show were you watching where you expected some kind of come-uppance for our vigilante killing machine? This isn’t The Shield and nor is it Breaking Bad. You can kill that noise right now because not every show has to be that way.

Debra is deadra after a blood clot after surgery leaves her so brain-damaged she can now enjoy conversation with Joey Quimm.

The main points: Debra is deadra after a blood clot¹ after surgery leaves her so brain-damaged she can now enjoy conversation with Joey Quimm. Dexter euthanizes her and dumps her in the ocean, presumably to stop Miami-Dade Metro from turning her into a bench like they did with LaGuerta. Dexter kills Saxon in his cell but gets off on some self-defence bullshit. Hannah takes Harrison to Argentina while Dexter fakes his own death to become a lumberjack in Oregon. He’s got nothing against Hannah and Harrison. Quite the opposite in fact. He feels he poisons everyone he gets close to and figures the best way to avoid that is to murder a bunch of trees instead.

I’m down with that as far as I give a shit.  Deb being dead means she can’t kill any more innocent cops or suck another unfortunate male into her almost always fatal drama whirlpool and I’m sure Harrison will be fine with the skank in Buenos Aires. And the world could always use another lumberjack.

He feels he poisons everyone he gets close to and figures the best way to avoid that is to murder a bunch of trees instead.

The attraction of Dexter was that he killed bad guys be it the Skinner, the Ice Truck Killer, Trinity or Isaak Sirko. Its claim to being a complex excavation of murky morality was always sus. While it plumbed the deaths with its stinky season 6 it also scaled the heights of season four’s Trinity killer. It had memorable Big Bads, was occasionally brilliant and Michael C Hall was faultless throughout.

Sure it outstayed its welcome but it always knew how to have fun. Isn’t that what made us fall in love with it in the first place?

The verdict: What will happen to Masuka’s daughter?

Marks out of 10: 7

¹ You leave Sergeant Doakes out of this!²
² Fuck you. Doakes would love that joke. Sergeant Jokes.
