“Just when I thought I was out my lunatic mom stabs my wife in the brain.” The plate spinning act Jax Teller has been performing for the past 5 years finally came crashing down around him in the 13th and final episode of Sons of Anarchy‘s 6th season. Watching Opie get his skull caved in was bad – bad as it gets – but vengeance was his and so was hope. He had a wife, his boys and a gameplan to extract the poison that is the Club out of his system forever. Get the Sons out of guns and into legitimate enterprises and all the mayhem goes away. He so nearly pulled it off. Now he’s no longer a husband, a father only in name and facing a 10 stretch with stinky morbidly obese bikers for company. It was never meant to play out this way.

It can get worse. Patterson walks in on him shortly after he discovers the bodies of Tara and Roosevelt, cradling his dead wife and sobbing like a bairn. That’s motive, means and opportunity, your honour. How do you fancy life without the possibility of parole, Jax? He won’t get the death penalty. He’s rarely that lucky.

Of course it was an unholy alliance of Gemma and Juice who did for Tara and Roosevelt – Gemma labouring under the delusion that Tara was on her way to WITSEC, Juice plugging Roosevelt to save Gemma’s wrinkly ass and quite possibly put Jax in the frame after he declared him a traitor for blabbing to Nero about Darveny‘s last few moments of smother love on this Earth.
Back on the streets a gun deal between black and brown goes wrong when brown starts blasting on black so it seems like even the transition away from guns isn’t going to go smoothly. But that’s a walk in the park compared to Jax’s family issues. It looks like a combination of Gemma and Wendy will be raising Abel and Thomas – a junkie and their mother’s murderer. Pick the bones out of that childcare clusterfuck.

I’m not crazy about Tara’s death. Not because it’s too implausible or horrific to countenance but because I now have to see Charlie Hunnam‘s cry face for large parts of the final season. I hope to Christ they put most of that in a montage scored by Katey Sagal singing She’s a Rainbow.
The only happy ending this show is getting is when the Colette tugs someone off in Diosa Norte.
Still, it’s been a very strong 6th season with Clay buying the farm, several terrible Irish accents terminated forever and a brood of chickens coming home to roost bringing a payload of unholy plague-infected shit with them. I can’t call how it finishes but I know that the only happy ending this show is getting is when the Colette tugs someone off in Diosa Norte.
The verdict: Happy talk, keep talking happy talk.
