After getting off to a shaky start The Good Wife‘s fifth season kicked into gear with a vengeance. Diane got the heave-ho for badmouthing Will and then the Florrick-Agos axis of exit was uncovered and a turbo powered oscillating propeller fan sent human faeces flying in every direction. In scenes reminiscent of the Mad Men season 3 finale “Shut the Door. Have a Seat” Alicia, Cary and the fourth years pinballed around from secret rendezvous to angry showdown, desperately trying to effect their no longer secret conspiracy. This is the first episode when anyone gets to take a breath but the fallout continues to rain down and everybody’s getting splattered.

This week sees the unlikely return of Diane to Lockhart/Gardner. The Supreme Court Justice nomination was merked so she’ll have time on her hands and she and Will can put their differences aside now they have a common enemy to slug it out with. Whatever happens The Good Wife continues to be the best network drama on TV. The combination of tightly wrought legal jousting and compelling character conflicts has served it well. The prospect of Grace shaving her head and screaming at reporters only makes it more enticing. Bring it on.
