The Good Wife season 5 episode one review

CBS

Aerial Telly has long been a fan of The Good Wife, CBS’s legal procedural which has always been comfortably better than its title or phrase “legal procedural” imply. We pick up the action where we left it in season 4 with Alicia and Cary plotting a seismic GTFO from Lockhart & Gardner to set up their own operation. The quicker it happens the better. Less duplicity, less heartache and less chance of being found out as the conniving rat fucks they are. So we’re all good to go yeah? Clients all ready to jump, files all sealed, Pickfords van with engine running and antsy getaway driver at the ready? Oh you poor witless fool, of course not. This is Chicago and if you THINK YOU CAN CHANGE HOW THINGS GET DONE IN CHICAGO then you’re in for a world of being wrong about shit.

So we’re all good to go yeah? Clients all ready to jump, files all sealed, Pickfords van with engine running and antsy getaway driver at the ready?

The fourth-year associates making the jump with Alicia and Cary have realised that if they stick around for another 2 weeks I’ll get them a big fuck-off bonus before they fuck off and that is not to be sniffled at. David Lee is on to them however and he’s snooping around their phone records for evidence of subterfuge. And you know David – he’ll find it.

In all puts Alicia in a difficult position but she’s busy with Will and Diane saving some piece of shit death row inmate from execution because, in the great tradition of soulful black men in orange jumpsuits everywhere, he never done it. Working in tandem with them reminds Alicia of how much she admires Will and Diane, what she has achieved with the firm and how many times Will has put his cock in her. Her inner conflict builds exponentially.

Among the rest of the turds Peter appoints Eli chief of staff, Grace is now some kind of Ryman League Internet sex symbol and Kalinda still dresses like a 14-year-old girl raiding her mom’s slut closet and, let’s not dissemble, looks pretty effing good doing so.

It’s a fairly lacklustre opener, possibly because most right-thinking people would execute everybody on death row twice and the idea that death row is just stuffed with the wrongly convicted is pretty teedy. Still, it’s the best procedural out there, does consistently good work and it’s earned the right to the odd dud episode. Even when it’s not at its best it KO1 whatever wack shit you and your click are watching.

The verdict: Little ditty about Will and Diane.

Marks out of 10: 7
