Twisted season one review | Auntie passed? Oh.

ABC Family

You strangle one relative and you’re called Socio for life. That’s certainly been the experience of 16-year-old Danny Desai (Avan Jogia), handsome brown eyed enigma on ABC Family’s Twisted. It’s been 5 years since he strangled his aunt in a mystifying attack that had neighbours and friends alike saying “that’s pretty impressive for an 11-year-old”. Danny got thrown in chokey but his aunticide reflected badly on his best friends Jo Masterson (Madelaine Hasson) and Lacey Porter (Kylie Bunbury). “Aunt killer associates!” the cruel jibe from the playground rang,  “you showed poor judgment!” was another. Today, Jo remains a social outcast but Lacey has somehow clawed her way up to the pinnacle of the school mean girl pyramid. Now Danny the strangler is back in school and everyone wants to know: what’s eating Danny Desai?

He seems remarkably well-adjusted for a killer and although the Socio nickname is sticking he seems to be getting by OK. Lacey’s friend Regina (Karynn Moore) would rather like him to put his cock in her and isn’t shy about telling him as much. Lacey isn’t crazy about this development. She still resents Danny’s incredible thoughtlessness in briefly inconveniencing her social life with his relative killing. Jo feels the same way at first but softens over time as he’s an outcast just like her and, also, kind of hot. There’s a reason Aunt Terra had to die, he tells her, but he can’t say what it is because he’s protecting her. Sounds plausible to me. Maybe Danny’s not so bad after all?

That said it doesn’t look good when Vagina turns up with her skull caved in after having texted Danny that she knew why he iced his aunt. First day back from juvie for the murderer and we got ourselves a dead twelfth grader. It’s like another dead white girl showing up at OJ’s house.

This’ll do for now. The geeks, jocks, queen bitches, jocks, soulful outsiders and knuckleheads are all established, a somewhat intriguing mystery is in place and a tone of muted indifference to the horrors of adolescence prevails. I’ll put my life on Danny Desai not being the guy who murdered Vagina and it certainly sounds like his aunt had it coming. So give the kid a break, particularly as you know Jo is going to be banging the living shit out of him before the season is out.

The verdict: Laugh? We nearly shat. We had not laughed so much since Grandma died. Or Auntie Mabel caught her left tit in the mangle.
