Y’all know Aerial Telly as the handsome bald Black Irish bastard who gives no fuck and takes no shorts. He is also a proud son of Birmingham, England and had his first job aged 16 in a Black Country pipe and fittings merchant. So as far as he gives a shit about these things the use of the Birmingham/Black Country accent as a universal signifier of idiocy is of interest to him. The latest in a long line of offenders are Hotels4u whose current series of ads features a sparky flagcracker wife Poppy and a dimwitted acquiescent husbland Danny. Have a guess which one is the Brummie?

You are correct. Danny repeats “anything for yo, cupcake” in an accent that clearly wants to be Birmingham or Black Country but is actually neither and in a manner that suggests he was dropped as a child, possibly down a well, likely not retrieved for a while.

Obnoxious, inept and annoying it certainly is but unsuccessful? Don’t put money on it. Created in collaboration with Sian Vickers and Chris Wilkins, the duo behind the Go Compare campaign, as successful as it is teedy. As with Radion, Cillit Bang and Kwik Fit repetitive irritants increase brand awareness. This leads to beaucoup conversions even if it’s an aggravating brand, a Russell Brand if you will.

That this is essentially a hate crime against the West Midlands is a trifling matter to the regionalist storm troopers of advertising. Don’t think we forgot “Woi wannaboi together”.
