Deadbeat Hulu season 1 episode 1 review

Hulu

On the one hand Deadbeat is Hulu’s latest sortie into original scripted territory – a pleasing and often funny supernatural shitcom about Kevin ‘Pac’ Pacalioglu (Tyler Labine), a New York tub who sees dead people. But on the other much more important hand it is another chance for Huey from the Cum Lovin’ Criminals to watch the love of his life Catherine Deeley flaunt her marriage to Patrick Kielty. Deeley plays celebrity medium Camomile, Kevin’s beautiful yet fraudulent equivalent. After his brutal turding on Never Mind the Buzzcocks and his embarrassing attempts to enter the voice-over market it has become abundantly clear that not only is her increasing happiness and success inextricably linked to his misery and failure but that Patrick Kielty would beat him in a fist fight and that he would lose a cultural relevance contest to Seahorses’ frontman Chris Helmet.

For this week’s adventure Pac has to bang some old broad so a World War II ghost can get the ass he never got to tap of his then young girlfriend Angie. Sounds grotesque but bear in mind he’s getting the better half of that deal. Later, as he attends one of Camomile’s bookstore signings a barbecued ghost tells him that Camomile has all the psychic credibility of Derek Acorah. After he shows her up in the joint she punches him in the cock and if he wasn’t in love before then he certainly is now but with him being a turd and her being sexually attractive he has about as much chance with her as Blewey Morgan has with Cat Deeley.

I quite liked this.

The verdict: Ghost thinks with logic.
