Brooklyn Nine-Nine season one review | Pigsty do-or-die

Brooklyn 9-9

FOX

Being the kind of people who DKSA telly few of you will remember The Unusuals, ABC‘s excellent comedy drama police procedural. It only lasted one season because of The Man (the man who wouldn’t watch it in significant enough numbers). In many ways Fox‘s Brooklyn Nine-Nine is The Unusuals’ revenge. Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg last seen ears deep in Joanna Newsom‘s pumpum) is our focus – a brilliant yet childish 5-0 he needs to clean up his act to impress the new governor Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) a brilliant yet gay commander. What fun can a gay man and a child have together? It’s not quite that kind of show.

It’s a wacky cops show, that’s what it is. Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) is a bad bitch detective, April Ludgate’s (more) evil twin sister. Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) is a good girl detective, Casey Shraeger’s (more) uptight twin sister. Hopelessly cuntstruck by Diaz is Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), Jerry Gergich’s slimmer but equally fuck-up prone twin brother. Leader of the crew is Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), an emotionally crippled shitsack with a phobia of using his gun. Divided they are hopeless but together: slightly better than hopeless.

Andy Samberg clearing out Newsom’s crack juice out of his ears for long enough to put in a solid central performance as idiot savant Peralta.

And it works. It borrows the style and tone of 30 Rock and while it’s not quite at that level it’s a likeable funny show with Andy Samberg clearing out Newsom’s crack juice out of his ears for long enough to put in a solid central performance as idiot savant Peralta. In a week when New York councillors cockblocked one of Brooklyn’s favourite sons it’s good to see that the borough still has room for the outsider.

The verdict: Crooklyn Dodgers.
