Weeds Season 3

Showtime

In the most welcome leak since that piss drinking bastard Daniela Denby-Ashe‘s father’s condom split, the early episodes of the third season of Weeds have found their way on to the Interweb to the delight of greedy downloading bastards everywhere. Aerial Telly would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the leakers – those malcontent footsoldiers of the war against intellectual property. Something this good can’t be kept in the can until The Man decides to release it. Weeds belongs to us all, especially those of us who haven’t paid for it. And what a wonderful communal possession Weeds is – this clever, funny, subversive sitcom that follows widowed milf Nancy Botwin‘s descent into the drug trade. What started as just slanging to friends and associates has steadily become a full-blown criminal enterprise. Nancy is no longer a suburban soccer mom who deals some pot on the side. She’s now a full-time drug dealer and danger junkie.

And the danger is coming down in spades for the heroic milf, culminating in season two’s breathless finale with Nancy and Conrad being held at gunpoint by rival gangs both looking to gank them for the product and money from a huge weed deal, Nancy’s son Silas running off with the dope to negotiate an entrance into his mother’s business and Nancy’s DEA agent husband Peter apparently being killed by gangsters. There’s a spaghetti cluster of loose ends to be tied up and season three gets stuck into the task right away but things get no easier for Nancy. $150,000 in debt to maniac gangster U-Turn (and, no, he’s not for turning), facing one set of armed thugs after another, the equilibrium that dealing dope gave her life has gone, perhaps never to return.

Rather like Daniel Craig in Layer Cake, Nancy is realising that you don’t just get out of the drug trade. She’s going to have to hire some muscle to let people know that they can’t dick her around, get a good attorney and start insulating herself against federal indictment. You’ve got to want Nancy to succeed. she’s just like you or I would be1 were we in the drug trade. Picking it up as she goes along, gradually shedding every pretence of being a law-abiding citizen, learning the game the hard way. As the supporting cast and stories continue to be singularly brilliant and inventive, Nancy’s life careers at breakneck speed and one crisis to the next. Call yourself a TV fan? You cannot be missing this.

The best thing about it: It is just superbly well-written.

The worst thing about it: A couple too many jokes about Nancy being raped for my liking.

The verdict on Weeds Season 3: Currently, as good as TV gets.
