Sex – A Horizon Guide review | Fucking with science

Love Hate series 4 episode 3 review

BBC4

As a man who has had more dames through his door than the Old Rep Aerial Telly finds Sex – A Horizon Guide as redundant as a drug education programme is to Johnny “Half Sack” Lewis. Nonetheless it no doubt is of some use to the uninformed masses. Professor Alice Roberts (a made up person played here by Victoria Coren), head of boner studies at Shitsack University, authoritatively narrates footage from Horizon over the years that has dealt with the scientific study of sex. In what is clearly the product of literally hours of painstaking work in a video editing suite by underpaid researchers clip after clip of priceless research is presented making you say “yeah, I think I read that somewhere”.

Alfred Kinsey, of course, is our starting point. His pioneering books became bestsellers, bearing witness to the premarital sex, affairs, masturbation and bestiality his subjects lied about having. A decade later Masters and Johnson would pickup that ball and run with it past the end zone, through the turnstile and into the street.

This opened the floodgates to a deluge of sexual research that brought the world life changing knowledge and over the years Horizon covered it all. Lap dancers earn 30% more when at the most fertile point of their menstrual cycle; a penis looks like a boomerang when it’s inside a fanny and having a foreskin increases your chance of catching the AIDS. Incredible, right? A boomerang!

There’s also some really weird shit about the time they burned a baby’s cock off to see what would happen. Everyone seemed to commit suicide after that. You’d never get that past a medical ethics committee today but thank God someone had the courage to try it.

Horizon have phoned this in quite alarmingly but I for one am glad boner studies is now firmly established as a respectable discipline and that a couple fucking inside an MRI scanner raises an eyebrow no more than a health minister who believes in mindless hippy savagery. Professor Piehead does crucial work and I look forward to seeing her next show Here’s One We Did Earlier When We Had Funding for Science Programming.

The verdict: Awesome if you like clip shows.
