As we return to Breathless and the knocking shop that was the 1960s NHS the Truscotts are returning from their fabulous honeymoon to the swanky pad that will be their marital home. The shine is somewhat taken off proceedings by which its discovery that his foetus was one of the victims of the baby Holocaust of the first episode. He’s a bit miffed that Jean didn’t share this information before they got hitched. “I thought you would strangle me with the afterbirth”. Richard laughs but there’s a look in his eye that lets you know that he’s half thinking about it. Seriously, between Tarby, Cilla and the baby killing anything went in the 60s.
It’s exactly that kind of permissive society that brought forth a monster like Otto (named after Sylvia Plath‘s Daddy who he regards as a role model) . He still has a raging boner for Angela and thinks nothing of following her home to find out her address, the creepy stalker. He goes around the next day and sees for himself the chaos of her domestic life – the shitbox terrace, the senile dad and Maureen fricking Mulligan whose parents are still searching for her. It’s really obvious Angela wants to jump on Otto just as much and even more obvious that she eventually will but for now she’s playing the devoted wife to her gay husband Sailor Joe while he enjoys rum, sodomy and the lash.
The docs put her on brain pills but there’s no prescription for a broken heart. Unless you could write one for dick and she doesn’t seem to be into that.
The case of the week is all about some married dude banging his secretary and his wife trying to knife the chick with a scalpel. The docs put her on brain pills but there’s no prescription for a broken heart. Unless you could write one for dick and she doesn’t seem to be into that.
We find out that the weird dude sniffing around the Powells is Chief Inspector Mulligan (Iain Glen) who confronts Elizabeth with the dark past he shares with the couple and Enderbury. Cyprus 1953. Something about an American airman and a debt that can never be repaid unless he gets to fuck Elizabeth (my interpretation). Elizabeth pulls a gun but you just know he’ll be back. The show almost gets interesting.
The verdict: Don’t you remember you told me loved me baby?
