When Trophy Wife‘s milfy Kate (Malin Akerman) discovers that the Poseidon themed erotica her 15-year-old stepson Warren (Ryan Scott Lee) has been writing seems to be about her she is given pause. American TV has not shied away from sons wanting to fuck their hot moms and why would they? With Shane Botwin jerking off to nude photos of mother Nancy and Jimmy Darmody knocking the back out of Gillian on Boardwalk Empire it’s becoming as familiar a trope as people being pissed on or set on fire (a development Aerial Telly will write about at a later date – seriously, it’s a thing). Anyway, it’s just the latest in a succession of challenges since she got married to older guy lawyer Pete (Bradley Whitford) a year ago. His three kids from his two previous marriages make things a handful I can tell you! I imagine she wants to kill them like she’s a character in a contemporary British drama.
It’s an unlikely pairing. Party girl Kate met Pete after accidentally breaking his nose at a karaoke night. It was in the A&E that she first encountered his first wife – Dr. Diane Buckley (Marcia Gay Harden) a thoroughly professional but uptight stickler for the rules. She sees Kate as an airheaded skank but if only she could see the heart of gold that beats believe that rack then – we would probably not have a show. She is mother to aforementioned momshagger Warren and his twin sister Hillary (Bailee Madison). Warren does not want to shag his actual mom as she is not sexually attractive and if you disagree with this logic then maybe you’re the one with the problem.
Apropos that if you ever prompt Aerial Telly again he will pull your spleen out through your urethra and feed it to your dog.
“Wait – didn’t you mention TWO ex-wives? What’s up with that?” Apropos that if you ever prompt Aerial Telly again he will pull your spleen out through your urethra and feed it to your dog. But yes, his second wife Jackie (Michaela Watkins) is mother to Bert (Albert Tsai) a Chinese kid who I assume they adopted or bought off Angelina Jolie on eBay or something. He’s very much in that Renée Zellweger‘s kid in Jerry Maguire mould – adorkable/punchable, delete according to preference. Jackie is a rangy neurotic hippy nause and it seems very much like Pete chooses his wives the way Newcastle United choose members of their management set up.

So it’s life in a blended family for a woman who is basically still a kid herself, learning the ropes of responsibility, parenting and partnering. And it’s a pretty decent stab. Kate is likeable, Diane feels like a good foil for her and Warren the momshagger in particular looks to have some comic potential. The show bottles out of portraying the full extent of his stepmom lust by making it some bullshit friend of Hillary’s he was horndogging over but, trust, given even the slightest chance he’d be at that soccer mom tail like a rat up a drainpipe.
The verdict: Johnstone’s Paint Trophy – through to the fifth round on penalties.
